Every August 11th is National Presidential Joke Day, a day set aside to celebrate the humor that’s necessary to survive the presidency. From bumping heads boarding HMX-1 to throwing up during state dinners, this national day serves as a reminder that even the President of the United States experiences the occasional hilarious blunder.
Presidential Joke Day began nearly 35 years ago when Ronald Reagan joked during a speech sound check, “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” The sound check wound up being leaked and was consequently broadcasted on the CBS evening news.
Every year since, Presidential Joke Day served as a day of recognition for the funny, embarrassing, and awkward moments of those in office. Regardless of party affiliation, we can all appreciate a good sense of humor.
