An all-female “Lord of the Flies” remake is in the works, and it’s one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard.
News broke Wednesday about the upcoming movie, and the details are beyond stupid.
Deadline reports in part:
Scott McGehee & David Siegel have made a deal at Warner Bros to write and direct a new version of Lord Of The Flies, based on the iconic William Golding novel. They plan to be faithful to the novel with one major twist: the young students stranded on a remote island who descend into a savage social order will be girls.
McGehee said the subject matter “is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression.
Hollywood has had some stupid ideas recently, but the industry just seems to be in a race to the bottom. Who is going to pay $10 for a movie ticket so they can watch girls pout, whine and not address any of the issues on the island for two hours? I can’t imagine how funny it will be to watch Becky give Sarah the silent treatment for two hours over some past drama. Why forage for food when there are boy issues that must be addressed? Because we all know that’s the most realistic situation of how this would play out.
Of course, it sounds like the creators want to go out of their way to prove women can be just as cruel and evil as men. So this will undoubtedly be an unbearable and over the top display of how violent women can be.
Do the people behind this project not understand the entire point of “Lord of the Flies” is how aggressive men can become when there are no rules? Men are capable of doing awful things in times of chaos. History is painted with the blood of countless stories to back this theory up.
Women are more natural nurturers than men. They’re not inherently violent, and that’s a good thing. Can some women get violent if it’s necessary? Of course they can. Some women I’m related to can use a weapon even better than I can, but it doesn’t mean they’re instinctually drawn to violence in the same way men are.
We should celebrate the fact women have a softer nature to them. Why in 2017 are we so hellbent on beating the evolutionary and biological differences out of the sexes? I don’t want women to have the same traits as men stranded on an island. I’d like to believe women aren’t quick to start killing people when things go wrong.
Does this make me a sexist for wanting my women to be more loving or does it make me a hero for expecting more out of women? We may never know.
