The Northwest Abortion Access Fund reportedly gave $76,250 in grants to Idaho women last year so that they could have abortions.
The Northwest Abortion Access Fund (NWAA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit abortion fund that serves Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska awarded the sum in 2016 to low-income women in Idaho who wanted to have abortions, according to the Idaho Statesman Wednesday.
“We know abortion is health care. We know having an abortion or more than one abortion is normal, valid, and okay,” its website reads, explaining why it deems its services justified and needed.
The nonprofit seeks to fund abortions and make abortion access easier for people in the Northwest.
The NWAA also focuses on reproductive justice as it relates to racial, economic, and gender justice. “We recognize that systemic racism, through decades of policies and practices that continue to this day, has benefited white people and harmed people of color … We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter,” its website reads.
In addition to paying for abortions — which usually cost roughly $480 each— the NWAA paid for travel costs including planes, trains, buses, cabs and safe rides with volunteers, and footed the bill for home-stays, doula referrals for emotional support, food and meal delivery for women staying at hotels post-abortion. The group also pays for pain medication, spare clothing and heating pads.
The NWAA focused its resources on the state of Idaho last year, given that its law prohibits insurance plans from covering abortions with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the woman’s life. (Related: Abortion Clinic Performed 85 FREE Abortions In the Wake Of Hurricane Harvey).
Whole Women’s Health (WWH) also granted 85 women free abortions in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, collectively costing $50,620, according to Dallas News.
