The political and media worlds were stunned Thursday night at the not guilty charge delivered to Jose Garcia Zarate by a San Francisco jury.
Zarate, an illegal immigrant and convicted felon, shot and killed Kate Steinle while she was walking with her family in July of 2015. Zarate, who had been deported five times, was in San Francisco at the time due to their sanctuary city status. In 2015, Zarate was released by the San Fransisco county jail, even though federal agents asked for him to be detained for deportation.
Zarate was found not guilty by a San Fransisco jury in the murder of Steinle Thursday night. The reactions were deeply critical across the board:
I am disappointed and angry at the not guilty verdict for Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an illegal alien who had several felony convictions & was deported from the US five times. Justice must be served for Kate Steinle. https://t.co/IxiL9WCU50

I'm sorry Kate Steinle. I'm so sorry Steinle family.
Your government let you down. Your country let you down.
I'm so very sorry.

I greatly respect our jury system, but I could not disagree more with this verdict. I pray for Kate’s family. https://t.co/5Vvgo3Pu7r

Hours afterward, immigration officials announced that they will be deporting Zarate, now for the sixth time.
BREAKING: U.S. immigration officials say they will deport Mexican man found not guilty of murder in San Francisco pier shooting.

In stead of deporting Zarate for a sixth time, responses online to the news were full of other “suggestions:”
Too little too late . How about a lengthy Federal Prison term for YET AGAIN violating our immigration laws. He wants to be here so bad how about a life sentence.

Leave him in a sound-proof room with Kate's dad first. Give dad a little something wrapped in a towel, too.
