Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro appeared on Fox News Friday to offer his best defense for President Trump after Mike Flynn was charged for lying to the FBI.
Shapiro, appearing on “The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino,” said, “I think that the best defense here is that we don’t even know what Flynn was supposed to have done during the campaign. If you’re Trump, you are basically saying is, look, all we know is that Flynn lied to the FBI about contacts that he had with Sergey Kislyak like three weeks before the administration actually took office, during the transition.”
He continued, “What does that have to do with collusion? What does that have to do with conspiracy? What does that have to do with some sort of sneaky deal with Russia? It’s not even illegal. I mean, he was at that point about to become a transition official, so what exactly went wrong here? If you are the Trump team, what you are saying is that, ‘If the best you can do is lie to the FBI about a series of phone calls not illegal and not politically problematic, then this is a witch hunt.’ That seems to me their best defense here.”
